A confidential helpline is available Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. Our trained workers are there to listen and offer support to anyone who has been raped or sexually assaulted. They can also provide information about other services and agencies in West Yorkshire.
Initial Support Workers (ISWs)
ISWs are volunteers who can provide practical and emotional support over a six-week period. This support can take place in your own home, or if this is not suitable, we can arrange alternative premises. This support may involve some of the following:
- Enabling you to talk freely about the assault
- Providing information about health-related services, e.g. Sexual Health Clinics, pregnancy testing, etc.
- Providing information about police, CPS and Court procedures
- Providing information about other relevant local agencies, e.g. housing, benefits, etc
- Liaising with other agencies to obtain information or services on your behalf.
- Helping you to identify future options and make informed choices at the end of the 6-week period
- Should the case go to Court, an ISW can accompany you on a Pre-Court Visit and support you during the trial
Counselling
Counselling is a safe space in which to explore your experiences and feelings, in your own time and way. Counsellors are there to listen and support you, not to give advice or tell you how you should feel and what you should do. Talking in private with a counsellor can help you to understand how the experience has affected you; cope with any changes or difficulties resulting from it and adapt to life afterwards.
We have a range of counselling premises throughout West Yorkshire.
Our counsellors are all qualified to Diploma level and have undergone specialised training in the effects of rape and sexual abuse. All STAR Counsellors adhere to the BACP Code of Ethics.
Casetracking
If you have made a report to the Police, our Casetrackers will keep you informed of the progress of the investigation. They can provide you with information on the investigation process, any bail dates and court hearings. They can also arrange support for you during Pre Court visits and the Trial.
